Wildfires & High Winds

As wildfires and high winds sweep through Southern California this January, the Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD) remains steadfast in its commitment to being prepared and supporting emergency response efforts to safeguard our community. Below is an update on SMWD's resources and readiness.

SMWD is Fully Operational:

  • SMWD remains fully operational as of January 11, 2025, with all systems functioning to meet our community's needs.

Drinking Water Supply:

  • SMWD's drinking water reservoirs are fully stocked.
  • An emergency reserve of 244 million gallons of drinking water is stored at the Upper Chiquita Reservoir near Oso Parkway and the 241 Toll Road.

Resources for Firefighting Efforts

  • SMWD's reservoirs are prepared to support firefighting operations with significant recycled water reserves:
    • 1.6 billion gallons in the Trampas Reservoir (Ortega Highway).
    • 1.3 billion gallons in the Upper Oso Reservoir (Los Alisos and the 241 Toll Road).

Emergency Backup Power:

  • Backup generators at SMWD facilities are fueled with diesel, providing reliable power during power outages.
