Detectives are appealing for information and have released images of a firearm which was found near a Fairy Meadow sporting ground in October last year.
About 2.30pm on Sunday 6 October 2024, a 37-year-old man attended a sporting event at the Thomas Dalton Park on Pioneer Road at Fairy Meadow, when he found a grey Puma backpack.
A search of the backpack revealed a black pistol wrapped in a sock inside a clear zip-lock resealable bag.
The man reported the find to officers from Wollongong Police District, who commenced an investigation into the find.
The pistol was subject to a forensic examination by specialist police.
As inquiries continue, anyone with information into the firearm is asked to call Wollongong Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
