The ability of nations or companies to develop and operate AI within their own borders in line with their legal systems and cultural values.

As AI technology rapidly evolves around the world, the importance of sovereign AI-where nations and companies develop and operate AI domestically based on their own legal systems and cultures while using their own data and algorithms-is increasing. Especially in sectors highly related to the public interest-such as national defense, healthcare, and education-from a security and ethical standpoint it is often considered essential that governments and domestic companies have control over AI.

Why is sovereign AI gaining traction? One reason is the risk of information leaks and violations of privacy that can arise from excessive dependence on foreign countries or IT providers. With sovereign AI, infrastructure and data is managed domestically, with the aim of conducting highly transparent and sustainable AI operations while reflecting local values.

In Japan, SoftBank Corp. (TOKYO: 9434), through its subsidiary SB Intuitions Corp., is developing homegrown large language models (LLMs) specialized in the Japanese language. SB Intuitions is working to establish digital sovereignty and secure AI infrastructure by providing "Sarashina" and other LLMs.
