May is Water Safety Month

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (April 27, 2026) - National Water Safety Month is observed every May to raise awareness about water safety and promote education on preventing drowning and water related injuries.

Charlotte County Recreation offers swimming lessons for children beginning at six months old through adulthood. To promote Water Safety Month, community members who sign up for swimming lessons during the month of May will be eligible to win a Poolguard pool alarm for residential pools.

"This year, we're teaming up with Charlotte County Public Safety to share one message: swimming lessons can save lives" said Breanna Benevenga, public relations manager for Charlotte County Community Services.

"Water safety begins before anyone steps into the water. Teaching children and adults how to swim, understanding potential risks, and knowing how to respond in an emergency can save lives. We're proud to partner in this effort because prevention, preparedness, and education help keep our community safer year-round," said Fire Chief & Public Safety Director Matthew McElroy.

While lessons can be taken in any session offered in May, June, July, or August, enrollment is only valid for the prize entry if it occurs during May. Additionally, all participants are required to complete an in-person swim evaluation at the pool before enrolling in a class.
