MERANTI - To provide social security protection for people working in the informal sector, PT Timah has once again extended social security assistance through BPJS Ketenagakerjaan to fishermen and farmer groups in Rangsang District, Kepulauan Meranti Regency.

This BPJS Ketenagakerjaan social security coverage was given to 77 fishermen and farmer groups across Rangsang District, Kepulauan Meranti Regency. The handover took place at Parti Beach, Tanjung Gemuk Village, along with a mangrove planting activity, on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

BPJS Ketenagakerjaan is a social protection system that provides benefits for workers in the form of work accident insurance and death insurance. This social protection program is part of the company's commitment to improving the welfare of the community.

One of the beneficiaries, Tarusman from Tanjung Bakau Village, who works as a traditional fisherman, expressed his happiness and gratitude to PT Timah for caring about the community, particularly small fishermen like him.

"On behalf of other fishermen, I am very happy and grateful to PT Timah for providing this social security assistance. With the BPJS help from PT Timah, it certainly eases us and gives us peace of mind while working," he said.

Similarly, Iskandar, the Head of Tanjung Gemuk Village, mentioned that currently, not many fishermen have BPJS Ketenagakerjaan cards.

"Hopefully, with this assistance, the community, especially the fishermen, will become more aware of the importance of social security that can cover unexpected events," he said.

"Traditional fishermen work at sea with simple fishing gear and minimal safety equipment. Of course, this is something that needs our attention, how to provide understanding on the importance of safety at work," he continued.

He stated that PT Timah is actively collaborating with the Village and District Government to socialize the program with fishermen and vulnerable groups, identifying participants who can access BPJS Ketenagakerjaan through PT Timah's facilitation.

"With this program, we hope to ease the burden on fishermen and vulnerable groups. The company fully covers the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan contributions for the recipients for one year," he added.

This BPJS Ketenagakerjaan assistance program has also received attention from the Kepulauan Meranti Regency Government, as expressed by Acting Regent Asmar when symbolically handing over the assistance to the recipients.

"We would like to thank PT Timah for its attention and concern for the people of Kepulauan Meranti, especially in Tanjung Gemuk Village. CSR programs like this are very important in supporting our efforts to improve community welfare and preserve the environment. We hope this initiative becomes an inspiration for other companies to contribute," said Regent Asmar. (*)
