The City of Poughkeepsie has donated $42,806 to Dutchess Outreach to expand food resources for individuals and families affected by recent reductions in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. The funding will support local food distribution efforts for Dutchess County residents experiencing food insecurity.
The City's contribution comes from remaining CDBG-CV funds under the 2020 CARES Act HUD award. This financial support reflects the City's ongoing commitment to addressing food insecurity and assisting vulnerable residents during a national food resource crisis.
Food distributions began on November 3 in the Family Partnership Center parking lot, located at 29 North Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie, and will continue while supplies last. Participants are asked to present their EBT card and bring a reusable bag.
Mayor Yvonne Flowers stated, "The City of Poughkeepsie recognizes the challenges families are facing due to the recent SNAP funding cuts. Our community will not go hungry. We remain committed to developing efforts that support our most disadvantaged residents."
In addition to financial support, Mayor Flowers and her administration continue to explore strategies to strengthen community resources and combat food scarcity.
Dutchess Outreach will continue its food assistance distributions at the Family Partnership Center from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, and from 9:00 - 11:30 AM on Friday, November 7.
"At the very beginning of this crisis, Mayor Yvonne Flowers was the first to reach out, offering immediate support to make sure City of Poughkeepsie residents had access to the food they needed. That early partnership helped us respond quickly and ensure our neighbors were cared for when they needed it most." said Renee S. (Fillette) Miccio, PhD, Executive Director, Dutchess Outreach.
