Man Faces Charges Involving Monday's Standoff on Shelby Avenue

Convicted felon Joshua Charlton, 39, faces at least six counts of aggravated assault against a police officer as well as felon in possession of a gun in relation to Monday's 5:40 a.m. incident outside a James Cayce Homes apartment in the 500 block of Shelby Avenue.

East Precinct patrol officers responded to the apartment due to an allegation of a sexual assault involving a woman known to Charlton. When officers approached the apartment door, they heard him say he had a gun and that he would shoot them. They then heard a gunshot. They were not injured. Charlton then barricaded himself inside the apartment until surrendering himself just before 8 a.m.

Charlton was also wanted on outstanding warrants for two probation violations, vandalism, and domestic assault. He has prior convictions for aggravated assault (2007 & 2014), reckless endangerment, and evading arrest.

Federal charges against Charlton are under consideration.
