Beach Fest Made A Splash

The long-awaited return of Superfest, the largest student-led event on campus, took place this past April. This year's event featured a tropical beach theme and ran from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, in and outside the Student Memorial Center, as well as on the Quad.

Organized by the University Activities Board, Superfest brought over 500 students and campus community members together for several hours of entertainment, food and activities.

The event featured free henna tattoos, bungee jumping, inflatable carnival games, stuffed animals, crafts, caricatures, animal balloons and more.

The first 500 students also received a free T-shirt, beach ball and food truck tickets. This year's food truck lineup included campus favorites Brick and Blaze Pizza, Kona Ice, Halo's Eatery and Potato Coop.

The planning for this large event was spearheaded by senior special education major Kevin Brooks, who served as UAB's director of special events.

"What I liked most about planning Superfest was that I got to do all the programming and come up with all the fun activities," shared Brooks. "At the end of the day, I was still a student here. I always kept the vision in my mind."

UAB aimed to provide a diverse range of weekday and weekend programming activities that gave students a social outlet on campus. Popular activities included monthly Bingos, movies, stuff-a-plush events and foam parties.

"This organization taught me how to be a leader, stand up for things and effectively plan for important events," Brooks said. "I am so grateful I had this opportunity and would not trade it for anything."
