28 Georgetown Alumni and Faculty Sworn Into 119th U.S. Congress

Twenty-eight Hoyas were sworn into the 119th U.S. Congress on Jan. 3, continuing Georgetown's long legacy of producing leaders and public servants.

Hoyas in the 119th Congress include 21 representatives and seven U.S. senators who represent 18 states and the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, which have non-voting delegates. They also include faculty and alumni from nearly all of Georgetown's schools, including 12 faculty and alumni from Georgetown Law and nine alumni from the School of Foreign Service.

Four alumni were newly elected to the House of Representatives: April Delaney (L'89), D-Maryland, the former deputy administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration in the Biden administration and also the wife of former Rep. John Delaney (L'88); Laura Gillen (C'91), D-New York, the former Hempstead town supervisor on Long Island; Sam Liccardo (C'91), D-California, former mayor of San Jose, California; and Derek Schmidt (L'96), R-Kansas, the former attorney general of Kansas.

In addition to the alumni in Congress, two former faculty members won their reelection races. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a professor emerita at Georgetown Law who joined the faculty in 1982, and Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-Illinois), a nurse who previously taught in the School of Nursing online graduate program and has supported other programs in the school.

Alumni in Congress also include multiple lawmakers in congressional leadership. In the House, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (G'94), D-New York, who earned a master of public policy degreefrom the McCourt School of Public Policy, has served as the House minority leader and leader of the House Democratic Caucus since 2023. Rep. Ted Lieu (L'94), D-California, is the Democratic Caucus vice chair, and Rep. Lori Trahan (SFS'95), D-Massachusetts, is the co-chair of House the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

In the Senate, Sen. John Barrasso (C'74, M'78), R-Wyoming, serves as the Senate majority whip, while Sen. Dick Durbin (SFS'66, L'69), D-Illinois, serves as the minority whip.
