Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach invites community members to the grand reopening celebration of the newly renovated Martin Luther King Jr. Park Pool, taking place at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2025, at the park's swimming facility (1910 Lemon Ave.). The event will feature remarks from Mayor Rex Richardson, Sixth District Councilwoman Dr. Suely Saro and other City leaders followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Recreational swimming will be available after the event from 1 to 3 p.m. following scheduled swim lessons.

"We are committed to investing in and creating public spaces where community members of all abilities can gather, connect and enjoy the benefits of recreation and wellness." said Mayor Rex Richardson. "We invite the community to join us as we celebrate these significant enhancements to our Martin Luther King Jr. Park Pool, which will both extend the useful life of the facility for years to come and provide a welcoming space for residents to engage in fun activities and stay cool just in time for summer."

The project upgrades enhance accessibility to the swimming pool and learner pool and improve the pool building with refreshed interior and facility features, including new restroom plumbing, locker room drywall repairs and new paint and doors and windows throughout the facility. Renovations also include pool deck repairs and waterproof coating, new plaster and tile depth markers, pool light fixtures, refurbished and repainted diving stands, new battery-powered pool lifts and upgrades to the pool's circulation, filtration and chemical systems.

"I am thrilled to welcome the community back to our beloved and improved Martin Luther King Jr. Park Pool. It now features enhancements that both improve accessibility and make it a more welcoming place for everyone to swim, cool off and enjoy fun water activities," said Sixth District Councilwoman Dr. Suely Saro. "This project reflects our ongoing commitment to investing in community-centered recreation facilities that are inclusive, beautiful, and modern."

Phase 1 of the Martin Luther King Jr. Park Pool Upgrade Project, which began in January 2023 and was completed in February 2024, included replacement of old plumbing in the restrooms, repair to discolored drywall in both locker rooms and refreshed spaces throughout the facility. Phase 2 construction, which began in February 2025 and was completed on June 13, introduced key accessibility features and enhancements to the entire facility.

An Elevate '28 initiative, the project is funded with $1.85 million in Measure A funds. Elevate '28 is a comprehensive five-year infrastructure initiative dedicated to enhancing Long Beach parks, community facilities, mobility access and streets For more information about Elevate '28, visit lbelevate28.com.
