The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status, and disability. California law extends these protections to members of the military and veterans. Discrimination can take many forms, from being told an available unit has already been rented to being refused a reasonable accommodation for a disability. If you believe your rights have been violated, you can file a complaint with the Fair Housing Foundation by calling 1-800-446-3247 or visiting www.fhfca.org. Free workshops and rental counseling services are also available, with assistance offered in over 200 languages.
