In new PSA, the FDNY reminds New Yorkers to stay off the ice

February 13, 2026

In a newly released Public Service Announcement (PSA), the FDNY is reminding New Yorkers that it's extremely dangerous to go on any ice.

Despite appearances and outside temperatures, ice can be dangerously thin and unpredictable, especially as temperatures fluctuate. Cold water can reduce body temperatures quickly, which accelerates the signs and symptoms of hypothermia.

Hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. It can be a life-threatening condition.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
