World@VCU is a VCU News feature, in partnership with the Global Education Office, that
highlights students from around the world who enrich the VCU community. Lotus Al Habahbeh is pursuing a degree in business IT management and studying at VCU this semester in the U.S./Middle East Partnership Initiative program.
Jordan is a country in the Middle East with many places to visit. If you want to see the mountains, you should go to the north, and if you're more interested in the desert, you can visit the south, where Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is located. In Amman, the capital of Jordan, you can find both historical and modern places, along with many restaurants and a variety of food options. Our traditional dish, mansaf, is a must-try, and Jordan is also famous for its delicious shawarma, considered among the best in the region. Beyond the sights and food, what makes Jordan truly special is the people. Jordanians are incredibly welcoming and generous, and we take pride in honoring our guests, especially those visiting from other countries.
I go to the Lebanese American University in Lebanon, and I'm also part of a program funded by the U.S. State Department called MEPI Tomorrow's Leaders, which offers the opportunity to study at a partner university in the U.S. When I saw my options, it was either going to be VCU or the University of Pennsylvania - I also have friends who went to VCU and Penn. They told me VCU is very diverse, we have so many [food] options, the dorms are really nice, and we have free transportation. You can do literally anything you could ever think of here. So I came to VCU.
One of my favorite memories so far in America was attending the multicultural iftar on March 5. It was a beautiful experience that allowed me to connect with people from many different cultures. Everyone proudly represented their backgrounds by wearing traditional clothes and sharing their cuisines. The iftar made me feel like I truly belong here at VCU and that I am part of a welcoming and inclusive community where everyone is appreciated, regardless of their background.
In my free time, I love playing the guitar and staying active. Playing music helps me relax, and I like how it allows me to express myself. I also enjoy doing yoga, going to the gym, and playing badminton. I love exploring new places with my friends, and you'll almost always see me with a camera, capturing memories.
I'm someone who loves trying new things and exploring new places. In the future, I hope to finish my education and visit new countries. I might pursue a master's degree in a field that I'm passionate about, and I may work for a company for some time. However, I have always aspired to start my own business, where I can support people in my community and contribute to making Jordan a better place for everyone.
Never say no - always say yes. Even if you're in bed and don't feel like doing anything, if your friend is texting you, say yes and go out.
I would also say: always try to be the person who takes the first step. If you're new, I believe you should make the effort to get to know your surroundings and the people around you. Always be friendly, and the easiest way to start a conversation is by giving a compliment. I also want to mention that making friends at VCU is really easy because students here are so friendly and welcoming. They'll make you feel included, no matter where you're from.
