ATLANTA - Today, Human Rights Campaign endorsed-candidate Bentley Hudgins was declared the victor in the Democratic primary for the Georgia House of Representatives 90th District. The Georgia State Director for HRC for the past three years, Hudgins stands poised to bring another strong voice for LGBTQ+ and AANHPI representation in the Georgia Statehouse with a victory in the general election in November. Bentley will be the first openly non-binary person to serve in the Georgia legislature.
"We at HRC have been privileged to see Bentley's continued growth into a political force for good in recent years, and their victory tonight is a testament to the fact that the voters of the 90th State House District see it, too," said Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson. "Bentley has built a campaign rooted in service, community, and the belief that every Georgian deserves dignity and opportunity. While there's still work ahead before November, tonight was a major step forward toward a better, stronger, more inclusive Georgia State Capitol. We're proud to stand with Bentley as they continue fighting for their neighbors, for equality, and for a Georgia where everyone can thrive."
Throughout their career, including as HRC's Georgia State Director, Hudgins organized to build people power - from registering thousands of voters to helping over 20,000 Georgians access COVID vaccines - while fighting for the rights of Georgia's LGBTQ+ community. As a longtime champion for LGBTQ+ equality, Hudgins always stands strong in their support for the rights of all people to live openly and authentically.
As a proud Georgia native and graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Hudgins has spent the last decade fighting for democracy and protecting civil and human rights. Their advocacy has spanned roles at the ACLU, the Georgia AFL-CIO, the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute, and the New Georgia Project. Before running for the State House, Hudgins led on-the-ground organizing efforts as HRC's Georgia State Director, fighting for LGBTQ+ equality across the state. Their passion for taking on a system that has failed Georgia's queer and broader communities is a conviction that fuels them to continue working to build a future rooted in progress and inclusivity.
HRC's Commitment to Georgia
Equality Voters - including the more than 2.2 million in Georgia - are a powerful and diverse voting bloc united by support for LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, and they recognize and trust the HRC brand.
HRC PAC has made significant investments in Georgia over the years, working to elect pro-equality champions up and down the ballot and fighting against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, including work that resulted in none of the fourteen anti-LGBTQ+ bills passed from the most recent legislative session. Today, HRC PAC continues to build on this legacy by mobilizing Equality Voters and supporting leaders, like Bentley Hudgins, who are committed to ensuring every Georgian can live free from discrimination and with full dignity under the law.
The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ+ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
