Waynesburg University recently established a campus chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD), a prestigious national honor society recognizing academic excellence among first-year college students. The agreement was reached March 19.
Founded in 1924 by Maria Leonard, the dean of women at the University of Illinois, Alpha Lambda Delta is dedicated to encouraging superior academic achievement and supporting students in developing meaningful academic and career goals. The organization now includes hundreds of chapters nationwide and has recognized more than one million students for their scholastic accomplishments.
The addition of an ALD chapter at Waynesburg University underscores the institution's continued commitment to student success, academic excellence and early engagement in leadership and service opportunities. Membership in Alpha Lambda Delta is by invitation only and is extended to first-year students who achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher, placing them among the top academic performers in their class.

Alpha Lambda Delta also emphasizes leadership development, civic engagement, and professional growth, helping students translate early academic success into lifelong achievement.
"The establishment of this chapter enhances Waynesburg University's efforts to support student persistence and achievement, aligning with research indicating that early recognition and engagement contribute to improved retention outcomes," said Kelley Hardie, dean of students and assistant vice president of student development.
The University's first ALD cohort will be accepted in the fall of 2026, followed by a spring of 2027 cohort.
