Mexico and U.S. Agree on Measures to Strengthen Bilateral Air Transportation
  • The agreement affirms Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) as an integral part of Mexico City's airport network
  • Both parties will engage in ongoing dialogue to track progress on the future of air transportation between Mexico and the United States

The Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) report that, as a result of the ongoing dialogue with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), both sides agreed on a series of measures to advance the bilateral air transportation agreement.

Mexico reaffirmed its commitment to a competitive bilateral air market in which operating conditions promote the free flow of people and goods, within a clear, consistent regulatory framework based on international best practices.

Among the agreements reached, Mexico advanced its strategy for developing the airport system of the Greater Mexico City metropolitan area. Under the agreement, AIFA is established as an integral part of the metropolitan area's airport network.

The parties also agreed to work toward including AIFA in the 2015 Air Transportation Agreement, and will hold talks on the future of air service between AIFA and the United States.

On air cargo, conditions were established to ensure equitable and transparent access to the airport infrastructure at Benito Juárez International Airport and AIFA, expanding operational options and strengthening cargo links between the two countries, to the benefit of both airports.

SICT and DOT officials will establish a bilateral working group to oversee implementation of these commitments and, in due course, review current U.S. regulatory measures. The group may also draw on industry input, including from Mexican and U.S. airlines interested in continuing to consolidate their cargo operations at AIFA.

Through these actions, Mexico reaffirms its commitment to strengthening international connectivity and developing strategic infrastructure to promote shared prosperity. At the same time, SICT has made progress in facilitating the expansion of operations at AIFA.
