SGMC Health has named Alicia Jones, LPN, as the Health System Hero for April, recognizing her unwavering commitment to patient safety, teamwork, and compassionate, patient-centered care. Jones serves as a nurse at the Dogwood Senior Behavioral Health Center at SGMC Health Berrien, where her daily actions consistently support a culture of safety and reliability.
Jones exemplifies the principles of a High Reliability Organization (HRO) through her proactive approach to fall prevention. Known for her vigilance, attention to detail, and strong collaboration with colleagues, she has played a direct role in helping multiple patients avoid falls. By identifying risks early and partnering with her team to implement effective safety interventions, she helps protect patients while strengthening unit-wide safety practices.
According to Kevin Moore, Campus Administrator at SGMC Health Berrien, Jones is widely respected for her professionalism and values-driven leadership. "Colleagues describe Alicia as dependable, engaged, and deeply committed to doing the right thing-for patients, teammates, and the organization," Moore said. "She sets a strong example of what it means to prioritize safety while leading with compassion."
Jones was recently recognized for submitting a thoughtful reflection highlighting her collaborative approach to improving fall-prevention practices. Her nomination underscored the way she actively partners with fellow team members to strengthen safety processes, encourage open communication, and ensure every voice is heard in the pursuit of reliable care.
In addition to her work on the unit, Jones demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility to the health system as a whole. She is always willing to step in when needed-including traveling to other campuses and units-and promptly communicates concerns to leadership, allowing for timely action and reinforcing systemwide safety awareness.
Beyond clinical excellence, Jones is also known for her compassionate, patient-centered care. On her own time, she sought out and secured large-print Bible donations so patients on the Dogwood unit could read comfortably and find peace during their hospital stay. This thoughtful gesture reflects her servant leadership and deep empathy for the whole person-not just the diagnosis.
The Health System Hero Award honors team members who go above and beyond their roles to support patient safety, quality outcomes, and a culture of human kindness across SGMC Health.
