Chinese Ambassador to Tonga Liu Weimin Visits Tonga Power Limited

On April 28, 2026,Ambassador Liu Weimin met with Mr. Scott Westbury,Chief Executive Officer of Tonga Power Limited. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on Tonga's energy security situation and the current state of its electricity supply.

Ambassador Liu said that China has notable advantages in the new energy sector. The China-aided wind farm operates smoothly, continuously providing clean electricity to the local communities and facilitating energy transition. China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Tonga, deepen cooperation in power planning and new energy development, and work together to address common challenge of energy security.

Mr. Scott Westbury said that Tonga is highly dependent on imported diesel for power generation. Affected by fluctuations in international oil prices, unstable shipping schedules, and limited local storage capacity, the country's energy supply chain remains relatively fragile. He said that the China-aided new energy power generation projects have effectively eased Tonga's electricity pressure. He looks forward to further deepening cooperation with China to improve Tonga's energy supply situation.

After the meeting, Ambassador Liu did a field trip to the solar PV farm invested by Chinese company.
