Respect for political neutrality in the European Schools

Respect for political neutrality in the European Schools

15.1.2025

Question for written answer E-000159/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Catherine Griset (PfE), Afroditi Latinopoulou (PfE), Malika Sorel (PfE), Mathilde Androuët (PfE)

The mission of the European Schools is to provide a multilingual education for the children of staff at European institutions.

However, recent initiatives in European schools, such as flying an LGBT flag in front of buildings or adopting an LGBT charter that promotes controversial concepts such as inclusive writing (rejected by the Académie Française) and gender transition among under-age pupils, are being seen by parents as proselytising, undermining the neutral educational role that these establishments are supposed to play.

  • 1.What guarantees can the Commission provide to ensure that the European Schools remain a neutral space where pupils are not confronted with political and societal debates?
  • 2.Does it envisage measures to prevent the teaching provided in the European Schools from becoming a lever for political or ideological activism, in order to refocus these establishments on their educational mission and their multilingual vocation?
  • 3.Does it intend to facilitate access to these European schools at more affordable prices so that poorer families can send their children to them, thereby adding social diversity to cultural diversity?
