Caltrans To Perform Next Traffic Lane Shift As Interstate 5 Anchor Pavement And Rehabilitation Project Continues

Construction Stage 6 Traffic Shift To Be In Place From September 26 Through December 2025

San Joaquin County- The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will soon be shifting all traffic lanes on Interstate 5 (I-5) between Hammer Lane and Eight Mile Road in Stockton as construction progresses to Stage 6 of the I-5 Anchor Pavement and Rehabilitation Project.

The Stage 6 traffic shift will begin September 26, 2025, and will see three traffic lanes on northbound and southbound I-5 remain open during daytime hours, with alternating lane and ramp closures overnight. The northbound #1 (left) lane will be shifted behind k-rail and crossed-over to the newly-paved southbound I-5 left-median lane, with the #2 (middle) and #3 (right) lanes open on the northbound mainline.

Southbound motorists will travel in the #2 (left), #3 (middle), and the newly-paved right shoulder lane. (See illustration above). This Stage 6 traffic shift is expected to be in place through December 2025.

Construction Stage 6 will see work being performed on the #3 (right) lane and right-hand shoulder of northbound I-5 between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton.

I-5 Anchor Project - Completed Work So Far:

Caltrans and the contractor, Bay Cities Paving and Grading Inc., have already completed:

• Stage 1 - Widening of the northbound and southbound median shoulders from 4 feet to 10 feet.
• Stage 2 - Paving of the northbound I-5 right-hand shoulders.
• Stage 3 - Replacement of the southbound I-5 damaged existing #3 lane (concrete) and right-hand HMA shoulder with new Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton.
• Stage 4 - Replacement of the southbound I-5 damaged existing #2 (middle) lane with new Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton.
• Stage 5 - Replacement of the southbound I-5 damaged existing #1 lane (concrete) with new Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton. Paving and striping of the on and off-ramps from SR-12/Flag City to Walnut Grove Road.

The above listed traffic shifts and lane/ramps closures are required as part of the I-5 Anchor Pavement Project that will improve 34 miles of existing pavement and shoulders from Hammer Lane in Stockton to the San Joaquin/ Sacramento County line. The project will also overlay on- and off-ramps with asphalt concrete at Eight Mile Road, SR-12, Turner Road, Peltier Road, and Thornton Road/Walnut Grove Road.
