​Over 1,200 Pupils Run in Primary School Cross Country Event

Posted on : 07 Oct 2025 Over 1,200 primary school pupils from across Caerphilly County Borough took part in the annual Primary Schools Cross Country event on Thursday 2nd October, hosted by Sport Caerphilly at Blackwood Showfield.

The event saw 21 schools compete in the morning and 23 schools in the afternoon, with races across Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 age groups for both boys and girls.

Morning Overall Winners
  • Year 3/4 Girls - St Helens RC Primary School
  • Year 3/4 Boys - Libanus Primary School
  • Year 5/6 Girls - Plasyfelin Primary School
  • Year 5/6 Boys - Machen Primary School

Afternoon Overall Winners
  • Year 3/4 Girls - Pengam Primary School
  • Year 3/4 Boys - Twyn School
  • Year 5/6 Girls - Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili
  • Year 5/6 Boys - Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili

Jared Lougher, Sport and Leisure Services Manager, said "It was fantastic to see so many schools take part in this year's Cross Country event. The level of enthusiasm and effort from the children was outstanding, and it really showcased the positive role sport plays in building confidence, friendships, and healthy habits from an early age."

Sport Caerphilly would like to thank all schools, teachers, volunteers, and families who supported the day, along with students from Coleg y Cymoedd who kindly gave their time to help deliver the event.

The event supports the Council's Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019-2029, which is committed to increasing opportunities for the community to be active, develop their potential, and enjoy the many benefits of sport.
