WASHINGTON -Optica Publishing Group is pleased to announce that Irina Novikova and Siddharth Ramachandran have been appointed as the new Editors-in-Chief of the Journal of the Optical Society of America B (JOSA B) and Optics Express respectively. The Editors began their tenure on 1 January 2025.
Irina Novikova, Journal of the Optical Society B (JOSA B)
Novikova is a Professor of Physics at the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. An expert in experimental quantum atomic and optical physics, Novikova studies the coherent interaction of light with atoms to control and manipulate optical properties of atomic ensembles, such as electromagnetically induced transparency, and their application for the generation of non-classical (squeezed) light and for developing new precision metrology devices, such as atomic clocks, magnetometers, electrometers, etc. She is a Fellow of Optica and the American Physical Society (APS).
A longtime volunteer for the Society, Novikova is currently a member of Optica's Publications Council and has served on Optica's Membership Engagement and Development Council, among other roles. She has also been a CLEO Program Chair and a General Chair for Fundamental Science in 2017 and 2019 respectively, and she has served the community in many other volunteer roles, including being a member and Chair of the U.S. Advisory Committee to the International Commission for Optics, a Vice Chair of the APS Division of Laser Science, and a local organizer for 2019 CUWiP conference. Her editorial experience includes serving as a Deputy Editor and Associate Editor for Optica, two terms as Topical Editor for Optics Letters, and a member of the editorial board for Scientific Reports.
Novikova takes over the Editor-in-Chief position from Prof. Kurt Busch, who led the journal from 2019 - 2024. When asked about her new role, Novikova stated, "I am honored and excited to become a part of the JOSA B legacy and will do my best to maintain and improve its relevance and importance as a go-to journal for technical results in the optics world."
Siddharth Ramachandran, Optics Express
A Fellow of Optica, AAAS, APS, IEEE, and SPIE, Ramachandran is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. His work centers on nonlinear, ultrafast and quantum photonics, especially with the use of structured and singular light, in optical fibers and bulk media.
He has served as a Deputy Editor and Associate Editor for Optica, as well as in editorial positions with Optics Letters, Photonix, IEEE Journal Quantum Electronics. He has also had several guest editor roles. Ramachandran was a CLEO Program Chair in 2015 and a General Chair in 2017, when the Applications and Technology track was added to the program. He was named a 2019 Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellow by the US Department of Defense, the agency's most prestigious award given to an individual researcher.
Ramachandran succeeds Prof. James Leger, who was editor-in-chief from 2019 - 2024. Commenting on the position, Ramachandran stated, "I am delighted to be entrusted with this leadership role of Optics Express, which is already a beloved journal providing the largest compendium of substantive, high-quality optics and photonics results that stand the test of time."
Commenting on these appointments, Elizabeth Nolan, Chief Executive Officer, Optica shared, "We are very grateful to Profs. Busch and Leger for their strong editorial leadership and commitment to JOSA B and Optics Express over the last six years. We are also excited to welcome our new Editors-in-Chief for these journals and look forward to working with Profs. Novikova and Ramachandran in their new roles. I am confident that their wealth of professional experience in optics and photonics and their extensive editorial experience will ensure the continued success of JOSA B and Optics Express."
