Governor Polis Applauds $17 Billion Settlement with Meta to Support Kids' Mental Health

DENVER - Today, Meta and 47 states, including Colorado, reached a $17 billion settlement after the states alleged Meta knowingly exposed children to harm on Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Under this settlement, Colorado will receive nearly $615 million over nine years to protect and improve children's mental health and safety. Under the agreement, Meta also agrees to implement safety reforms to protect children.

"I thank Attorney General Phil Weiser and the other states that stood up for children to ensure that major technology companies are not purposefully harming their mental health. The funding will make a positive difference for youth mental health. While this settlement is an important step, it doesn't mean that parents should stop paying attention to their kids' social media use. I encourage parents to take the steps that make most sense for them to make sure that social media is a constructive, not destructive, piece of their kids' lives, if they let their kids use social media at all," said Governor Polis.

Governor Polis signed a new law this year that requires social media companies to be quickly responsive to law enforcement warrants. This bill ensures that social media companies do not slow down law enforcement investigations that keep us all safe.
