July 23, 2026

MADISON, S.D. - Dakota State University continues expanding its leadership in technology-focused education with the launch of a new Bachelor of Science in Financial Technology (FinTech), an innovative program designed to prepare students for careers in the rapidly evolving digital finance industry. Beginning in the upcoming academic term, students will be able to pursue the degree either on campus or online.

The interdisciplinary program combines finance, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and data analytics to prepare graduates for careers in digital banking, financial analytics, payments, investments, compliance, and other emerging areas of financial technology. As a STEM-designated degree, the program emphasizes hands-on learning through applied projects that mirror real-world industry challenges.

"Dakota State University has built its reputation by anticipating where technology is headed and preparing students to lead the industries of tomorrow," said DSU Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Rebecca Hoey. "Our new Financial Technology program reflects that commitment by combining the university's strengths with the growing demand for professionals who understand both technology and business. Graduates will leave prepared to make an immediate impact on one of the fastest-changing sectors of the global economy."

Available online and on campus, the program offers students the flexibility to complete their degree in the format that best fits their goals while collaborating with faculty and classmates on projects involving modern financial systems, digital banking platforms, analytics, and emerging technologies.

"Financial technology is revolutionizing the entire finance industry, and specifically for each of us, how we bank, invest, make payments, and manage our financial information," said Dean of the College of Business & Information Systems Dr. Darrel Sandall. "Our FinTech program gives students a unique blend of technical and financial expertise that employers increasingly seek. By integrating finance with cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and data analytics, we're preparing graduates to lead innovation across the financial services industry."

One of the few programs of its kind in the region, the FinTech degree builds on Dakota State University's nationally recognized leadership in technology education while addressing the growing workforce demand for professionals with expertise in both finance and emerging technologies. Students will graduate prepared for careers in banking technology, financial analytics, blockchain development, consulting, compliance, financial technology startups, and related STEM fields.

The new program reflects DSU's mission to provide high-quality, technology-driven education while expanding opportunities for students across South Dakota and beyond.
