Shaun Gleason has been named director of the Partnerships Office at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, effective January 6.

The Partnerships Office advances and connects several critical elements within and beyond the laboratory, including entrepreneurship, commercialization and intellectual property management; technology transfer; strategic partnership programs; economic development and regional innovation; institutional industrial partnerships; and research security.

"ORNL's mission is to advance science and technology that has impact at scale, across the local region, the nation, and the world," said Susan Hubbard, the lab's deputy for Science and Technology. "Shaun's long and diverse experience at ORNL- as well as his success as a scientist, scientific director and entrepreneur - equip him to provide strategic leadership of the Partnerships Office. He brings a compelling vision to support the laboratory's strategic science and technology mission and its translation into the marketplace."

For the past year, Gleason served as ORNL's director of Science-Security Initiative Integration, leading lab-wide integration efforts for strategic initiatives such as quantum information science and artificial intelligence.

Gleason joined ORNL in 1989. An electrical engineer by training, he developed a technology at ORNL and took an entrepreneurial leave in 1998 to co-found ImTek, Inc., a preclinical medical imaging company. ImTek transferred the ORNL-developed technology to the commercial sector and later merged with Siemens.

In 2008, Gleason returned to ORNL as a distinguished researcher and leader of the Image Science and Machine Vision group. He founded the Cyber and Applied Data Analytics Division in 2018, after serving as director of the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division from 2013 to 2018 and as ORNL's director of Institutional Planning from 2011 to 2013. He also served as interim associate laboratory director for the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate from June 2023 until December 2023.

Gleason earned his undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Tennessee. He has authored and coauthored 120 publications and has been issued 10 patents in the fields of electrical engineering, computer vision and machine learning. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

UT-Battelle manages ORNL for DOE's Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. DOE's Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, visit https://energy.gov/science. - Brynn Downing
