Thompson's Student Aid Fraud Oversight and Accountability Act Advances through the Committee on Education and Workforce

WASHINGTON D.C. - Today, the House Education and Workforce Committee advanced a bill introduced by U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson (PA-15) that would combat fraud in higher education.

The Student Aid Fraud Oversight and Accountability Act will create an oversight mechanism requiring the Education Department to identify institutions that disburse federal aid to applicants flagged for potential fraud, placing those institutions in a priority category that can allow for program reviews, audits, and other oversight activities. The legislation provides an exception for institutions that verify student identity, through in-person or live video call verification, before dispersing student aid.

"The advancement of the Student Aid Fraud and Accountability Act is a clear indication that we must put a stop to fraudulent actors plaguing our education system and taking taxpayer funds," Rep. Thompson said. "I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass this commonsense legislation on the House Floor."

"Fraud is everywhere, and although many schools are doing the right things, money is still being stolen," said Rep. Walberg (MI-05), Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee. "Rep. GT Thompson's bill combats fraud by helping ensure schools verify suspicious applicants before disbursing aid-and that fraudsters aren't getting rich at the expense of students and hardworking taxpayers. I am pleased that this bill passed the committee and look forward to advancing its efforts to safeguard taxpayer dollars."

This bill can now be considered for a vote on the House Floor.
