"If I wouldn't buy it, I won't sell it, and I won't donate it either."
For Walmart AP Team Lead Richard, this personal rule guides how he and his team approach food donations every day. That matters at a time when, according to Feeding America, nearly 48 million people in the U.S. live in food-insecure households. Across the country, Walmart stores and Sam's Clubs have an opportunity to help by donating fresh produce, dairy, meat and other food to local organizations serving their communities.
But donating fresh food is a race against the clock. Once these items are identified for donation and sorted at the store, the timer truly starts. It takes a system made up of the right equipment, pantries and people to transport and store temperature-sensitive food safely and get it to a neighbor's table.
That's why Walmart, the Walmart Foundation and Feeding America have worked together to strengthen food recovery across the charitable food system. Throughout their twenty-year partnership, they have rescued over nine billion pounds of food, including more than 769 million pounds last year alone. Of those 769 million pounds, more than half was fresh food like fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat.
Walmart recently announced another $15 million philanthropic investment in Feeding America to help build on that work. This funding will help expand pickup capacity, strengthen cold-chain infrastructure and modernize technology like MealConnect, helping move food more quickly from stores to local organizations, and, ultimately, to families.
"Bringing More to the Table," shows these efforts in action. It also features the people, partnerships and infrastructure that make it possible. Watch to learn how the food recovery process works and how Walmart and Feeding America are partnering to make a difference in the charitable food system.
