The Prohibited Burning Period in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River has been extended and will remain in place until midnight on Saturday, 28 March 2026.
With minimal rainfall forecast for the remainder of March, the fire restrictions that have been in place over summer will remain for a further two weeks, unless advised otherwise. This means no fires can be lit in the open air anywhere in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, including campfires, firepits and fuel-reduction burns.
Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said the decision was made following consultation with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, and local volunteer Fire Control Officers.
"The safety of our community is always our highest priority, and after consulting with local volunteer Fire Control Officers and other government agencies, the consensus was that it would be prudent to extend the Prohibited Burning Period until the end of March," she said.
President Jean-Rice said dry soil conditions mean the risk of fire remains significant.
"With minimal rainfall forecast and dry soil conditions, if a fire were to start, there is a real risk it could create serious challenges for our volunteer firefighters and the community," she said.
"To keep everyone safe, we're asking all residents and visitors to keep up the good work we've seen over summer by remaining vigilant and respecting the restrictions in place.
"This means, no fires, anywhere, at any time."
