WARWICK - The Ontario government is providing the Township of Warwick with up to $472,000 to help pay for emergency response costs and critical infrastructure repairs due to flooding that occurred in July 2024. The funding is being delivered through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program and is part of the province's plan to protect Ontario with record investments in infrastructure that will help keep workers on the job and keep communities safe.

"Our government is helping to protect the residents of Warwick as they recover from the extensive damage caused by the unexpected flooding last summer," said Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. "This funding will offset the costs of emergency response and repairs to damaged critical infrastructure, allowing residents to confidently and safely move forward in rebuilding their community."

On July 15 and July 16, 2024, the Township of Warwick experienced a severe thunderstorm, resulting in flooding across the municipality. The flooding led to extraordinary municipal costs related to emergency response and repairs to washed-out roads and damaged culverts.

"This investment demonstrates our government's ongoing commitment to supporting communities when they need it most," said Steve Pinsonneault, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. "By working together with the Township of Warwick, we're helping to rebuild essential infrastructure and ensure the community continues to thrive."

Ontario's MDRA program helps protect municipalities by helping to pay for extraordinary emergency response costs and damage to essential property or infrastructure that is due to a natural disaster.

Quick Facts

  • Eligible expenses under the MDRA program may include operating and capital costs that are over and above regular municipal budgets and are directly linked to the disaster.
  • A municipality may be eligible for the MDRA program if its disaster-related costs reach a threshold of three per cent of its own-purpose taxation levy.

Quotes

"The Township of Warwick is appreciative for efforts put forth by Minister Rob Flack and MPP Steve Pinsonneault and their respective staffs for their assistance as we worked through this event. This emergency response funding is the result of the ability of multiple agencies to work together cohesively during a crisis to restore infrastructure while preserving community health and safety."

Mayor, Township of Warwick
