Parks and Recreation Announces Fall Volunteer Opportunities

The Parks and Recreation Department today announced fall volunteer opportunities for activities such as community tree plantings, coaching, and assisting with special events.

"Our volunteers are amazing! Every day, their dedication and support enhances the quality of life for Lincoln," said Maggie Stuckey-Ross, Parks and Recreation Director. "Whether you want to volunteer in tree planting and maintenance, or participate in other programs and events, any time our volunteers give is important and meaningful to our department and our community."

  • Community Park and Dog Run Tree Plantings:

The Department seeks host groups and 15 to 25 individual volunteers for this work. Host groups will help organize volunteers, coordinate event schedules, and facilitate activities. These two-hour events are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Locations include Piedmont Park, Roper Dog Run, Oak Lake, Veterans Memorial Garden, Tierra Park, Tranquility Park, Peterson Park, and Stransky Dog Run.

Trainings are included at each event, and participants must sign the City of Lincoln waiver. Closed-toes shoes are required and gloves are encouraged. Minors under 19 must be accompanied by an adult. Contact Mike Comstock, 402-441-7847.

  • Youth Sports:

Volunteers will help coaches with Special Olympics flag football and basketball teams. Contact the Easterday Recreation Center, 402-441-7877.

Volunteers are also needed for the Jr. NBA basketball league to teach basketball basics to children ages kindergarten through eighth grade. Volunteers must be 16 years old to volunteer. Contact the Team Sports section, 402-441-7892.

  • Special Events:

Volunteers are needed for single day event activities including setup and cleanup, distribution of giveaway items, and providing support as needed.

Free Tree Distribution at Pioneers Park Nature Center, 1 to 4 p.m., September 28 - This event is part of the Pioneer Park Nature Center's Wild Fall Festival and includes the distribution of 250 free trees. Sign up at lincoln.ne.gov/treegiveaway or contact [email protected], 402-441-7847.

"F" street Halloween Events, "F" Street Community Center, 1225 F St. - Up to 15 volunteers are needed 1 to 4 p.m. October 27. Up to 40 volunteers are needed 2 to 8:30 p.m. October 31. Contact Jerry Taylor, 402-441-7951.
