Washington, D.C. -U.S. Senator Susan Collins marked both National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week and National Literacy Month by celebrating the Senate's unanimous passage of bipartisan resolutions recognizing these observances. Senator Collins, who co-chairs the bipartisan Senate Adult Literacy Caucus, introduced the resolution designating September 14 through September 20, 2025, as "National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week" with Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), and she also co-sponsored the resolution declaring September as "National Literacy Month."

"Improving adult literacy takes a whole community approach - our employers, educators, institutions of higher learning, workforce boards, libraries, and other partners," said Senator Collins. "Two years ago, I stepped forward to serve as co-chair of a new bipartisan Senate Adult Literacy Caucus, along with Senator Jack Reed. Our group is committed to advancing policies to help improve literacy among adults. Designating National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week and National Literacy Month helps bring focus to this important issue."

On Tuesday, Senator Collins was presented with the Coalition on Adult Basic Education's (COABE) Adult Education Champion Award from Lynn Sheehan of York Adult Education. Senator Collins received this recognition for her work to support adult learners and strengthen adult education.
