Washington, D.C.-Today, Representative Wesley Bell (D-Mo.) introduced the William Lacy Clay Sr. Memorial Stamp Actto create a commemorative postage stamp in honor of the late William Lacy Clay Sr.
"William Lacy Clay Sr. was a giant-not just for St. Louis, not just for Missouri, but for the entire country," said Congressman Bell. "He spent more than three decades in Congress fighting for civil rights, for working people, and for those too often left out or unheard. His legacy lives on in the movement he helped build, the Black lawmakers he helped lift up, and the community he never stopped serving. A commemorative stamp is a small but lasting way to honor his enormous impact-and to remind future generations of the values he stood for."
William Lacy "Bill" Clay Sr., the first African-American elected to Congress from Missouri, represented St. Louis in the U.S. House for more than three decades. A former civil rights activist and union organizer, he championed the rights of poor and working-class Americans, fought discrimination, and helped found the Congressional Black Caucus. Known for his unwavering commitment to principle, Clay left an indelible mark on labor rights, education, and civil rights legislation. He retired in 2001 and was succeeded by his son, Congressman William Lacy Clay Jr., continuing a family legacy of public service.
