INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - A new ad in downtown Indianapolis reminds Hoosiers that their high utility bills are thanks to coal. According to a new report, Indiana is the state with the highest year-over-year electric bills, as bills have increased more than 16% in the last year, and Indiana's energy prices have seen the biggest increase in two decades. Coal has increasingly become the least economical energy source as clean energy is more affordable than ever, yet utilities like Duke Indiana and CenterPoint Energy have cut back on their clean energy plans and instead delayed retiring their coal plants, raising costs for captive customers.

Sierra Club billboard in downtown Indianapolis calls out coal for Hoosiers' high utility bills.

"President Trump and Governor Braun promised to address soaring energy bills, yet Hoosiers are facing the highest utility bills in the last two decades thanks to coal," said Nicole Chandler, Southwest Indiana Beyond Coal Campaign Organizer at Sierra Club. "Affordability is top of mind for folks across Indiana and the country, but a lot of folks don't realize that the skyrocketing cost to keep their lights on and heat their homes is because of coal. Indiana's leaders should be supporting common sense, affordable clean energy solutions that lowers costs for Hoosiers- not selling them out to monopoly utilities."
