OXBOW, Oregon - The road over Hells Canyon Dam will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians, Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 7-8 , from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mountain Time, while crews perform maintenance on the dam.
Traffic will be allowed to cross from noon to 1 p.m. each day. The closure is necessary because the work requires use of a large crane that takes up both lanes on top of the dam. The crane will be moved during the noon hour to permit crossings.
Also note, the U.S. Forest Service's Hells Canyon Creek Visitors Center downstream of the dam is closed for the season.
Located 21 miles downstream of Oxbow Dam, Hells Canyon Dam is the third and last project in the Hells Canyon Project. It began generating electricity in 1967 and has a nameplate generating capacity of 411,075 kilowatts.
