Supporting workers, businesses affected by weather closures

Jan. 15, 2026
No. 26-1

The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOLWD) is committed to supporting Alaska's workforce and employers during weather-related disruptions. For example, recent snowstorms in Southeast Alaska have resulted in some business closures with unknown re-opening dates. All regions of Alaska face extreme weather, and sometimes the weather impacts Alaska's workers and businesses. DOLWD has resources available to help both workers and businesses navigate these impacts. "The Division of Employment and Training Services is eager to assist Alaska's workers and businesses facing weather-created disruptions impacting their livelihoods," said Division Director Paloma Harbour.

Support for workers

Workers affected by temporary or permanent business closures are encouraged to visit their local Alaska Job Center or contact the Alaska Job Center Network at (877) 724-2539. Knowledgeable staff are available to assist with job search services, including job referrals, résumé development, cover letter writing, and interview preparation. Impacted workers may also be eligible for additional assistance, which may include funding for relocation to begin a new job, training for a new career, and supportive services such as continuation of health coverage (COBRA), housing assistance, and utility assistance.

Eligible workers may also qualify for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits. More information is available on the Unemployment Insurance webpage at https://labor.alaska.gov/unemployment or by contacting a UI Claim Center closest to your area. Claim Center technicians are available 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Alaska Standard Time (AST), Monday through Friday.
