Washington D.C. ─ Today, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL-20), Co-Chair of the Haiti Caucus, led over 35 members of Congress in a letter that urges the Trump Administration to reverse its decision to eliminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals.
"Across the country, [Haitians with TPS] have strengthened our workforce, supporting our airports, hospitals, small businesses and schools. Approximately 130,000 TPS holders work in essential sectors such as healthcare, construction, and food services, making significant contributions to federal, state, and local tax revenues," the letter reads.
The abrupt removal of over 500,000 workers will have an immense and irreparable impact on businesses across the country and the economy at large. Collectively, TPS holders and their households contribute $2.3 billion in federal taxes and $1.3 billion in state and local taxes each year.
Earlier this week, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick introducedH.R. 1689 with Reps. Laura Gillen (D-NY) and Mike Lawler (D-NY), bipartisan legislation that would require the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security to designate TPS for Haitian nationals in the United States.
Additional signatories of the letter include Reps. Alma Adams (D-NC), Becca Balint, (D-VT), Shontel Brown (D-OH), André Carson (D-IN) Greg Casar (D-TX), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Shomari Figures (D-AL), Lois Frankel (D-FL), Sylvia Garcia (D-TX), Laura Gillen (D-NY), Daniel Goldman (D-NY), Josh Gottheimer (D-NY), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), Glenn Ivey (D-MD), Jonathan Jackson (D-IL), Sara Jacobs (D-CA), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Rick Larsen (D-WA), Jennifer McClellan (D-VA), James McGovern (D-MA), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Robert Menendez (D-NY), Grace Meng (D-NY), Kweisi Mfume (D-MD), Seth Moulton (D-MA); Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Delia Ramirez (D-IL), Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA), Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Adam Smith (D-WA), Dina Titus (D-NV), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Paul Tonko (D-NY), Juan Vargas (D-CA), Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), and Frederica Wilson (D-NY).
