Tackling wound infections with ‘smart bandage’ technology

Apr 8, 2025

The U.S. military faces numerous challenges on the battlefield, and among them, wound infections pose a significant threat to warfighter health and readiness.

Even with rapid access to advanced medical care, a substantial percentage of wounded service members experience debilitating infections. These infections not only impede recovery but also contribute to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. DARPA's Biological Technologies Office (BTO) is tackling this critical challenge head-on with innovative bioelectronics research under the leadership of Leonard Tender, program manager.

We spoke with Tender for the latest episode of Voices from DARPA.
