Maintenance Industry Working Group (MA I-WG) Gathers in South Korea

Presentations from INPO, CEZ, a.s., Bruce Power, OKG and others provided practical tools, case studies, and renewed approaches to training, cultural improvement, industrial safety, and risk management.

More than 80 nuclear professionals (both in person and virtually) joined the Maintenance Industry Working Group (MA I-WG) meeting in Busan, South Korea, from 10-12 March 2026. Hosted by KHNP, this hybrid international event brought together maintenance leaders, engineers, specialists, and organisational experts to exchange experience and strengthen global maintenance standards.

In his welcome remarks, MA I-WG CNO Mentor, Mr Seok-jin Cho shared an encouraging message that emphasised the importance of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement in maintenance performance across the industry. He stated:

"I hope this meeting will lead to practical and actionable improvements for all participating members. KHNP will continue to work closely with WANO to enhance global nuclear maintenance standards and further strengthen safety."

A Meeting Shaped Around Three Core Themes

Throughout the three days, discussions focused on:

  • Proficiency: strengthening technical capability and behavioural reliability across both permanent and supplemental workers.
  • Culture of Continuous Improvement: embedding behaviours and mindsets that prevent events and sustain high performance.
  • Maintenance's Role in Equipment Reliability: understanding how maintenance decisions, work quality, and vendor oversight directly influence plant outcomes.

Presentations from INPO, CEZ, a.s., Bruce Power, OKG and others provided practical tools, case studies, and renewed approaches to training, cultural improvement, industrial safety, and risk management. KHNP also shared insights into two major company-wide cultural campaigns aimed at improving transparency, personal accountability, and early recognition of issues.
