The University of Cincinnati College of Arts and Sciences is gearing up for the second annual Sustainability@UC Week to take place Jan. 27th through Feb. 1st. With a week full of events and activities, students, researchers, educators, staff, and the public are invited to participate and get involved in sustainability at UC.
The first Sustainability@UC Week was organized by The Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) in January 2024. This year's event promises to be even larger than the inaugural celebration, with a robust lineup of activities organized by a diverse coalition of campus organizations.
Angela Potochnik, director of the UC Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS), emphasized the event's growth.
"This year, the scale of Sustainability@UC week has grown immensely. There are 20 events organized by more than 12 organizations across UC. Most prominently, the School for Environment and Sustainability, Office of Sustainability, Net Impact, and Student Government have joined PEWS in leading this event. The result is more than any of our organizations could have accomplished on our own."
Sustainability Educators' Lunch: A gathering for faculty teaching sustainability topics, organized by PEWS Faculty Affiliates Eduardo Martinez (A&S Philosophy) and Andrew Bernier (School of Education). Jan. 29, noon to 2 p.m., Faculty Enrichment Center, Langsam Library.
Film Screening: A focus on children's sustainability television programming, spearheaded by PEWS Faculty Affiliate Nancy Jennings (A&S School of Communication, Film and Media Studies). Feb. 1, 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Clifton Court Hall Auditorium, breakfast and lunch provided.
Public Lecture: On Thursday, January 30, Harvard Professor of Landscape Architecture Niall Kirkwood will deliver a keynote lecture at 6:30 p.m. in Probasco Auditorium. His visit, facilitated by PEWS Faculty Affiliate Sang Cho (DAAP Planning), promises to provide insights on sustainable design.
From interactive sessions to academic discussions, Sustainability@UC Week offers something for everyone. Potochnik says. "This is an opportunity to connect to others across UC-and in the Cincinnati community-who prioritize sustainability research, learning, and action. It's a chance to highlight the resources and partnerships UC has to offer and for the UC community to come together around our priorities for environmental sustainability."
