As the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Lincoln University of Missouri joins the nation in reflecting on the ideals that have shaped America's journey: freedom, opportunity, service and the pursuit of a brighter future.
This year also marks a significant milestone in the University's own history. Founded in 1866 by the men of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantry, Lincoln University celebrates 160 years of transforming lives through education and expanding opportunities for generations of students.
While separated by 90 years, the stories of America's founding and Lincoln University's establishment are connected by a shared belief in the power of opportunity and the promise of a better future.
The signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 established a nation founded on the ideals of liberty and equality. Nearly a century later, following the Civil War, Black soldiers who had fought to preserve the Union and secure freedom for others envisioned a new path forward through education. Their determination led to the creation of Lincoln Institute, which later became Lincoln University of Missouri.
What began as a bold vision by a group of soldier-scholars has grown into a university that empowers generations of students to learn, lead and serve.
"For 160 years, Lincoln University has embodied the belief that education creates opportunity," said Lincoln President John B. Moseley. "As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, we are reminded that the pursuit of freedom and opportunity requires each generation to invest in the next. That is a responsibility we proudly embrace."
Today, Lincoln University's mission continues through the students who walk its campus, pursue their goals and prepare to make an impact in their communities and professions.
From future educators, scientists and entrepreneurs to public servants, healthcare professionals and business leaders, today's Blue Tigers carry forward the vision established by the University's founders 160 years ago. Their achievements reflect the enduring power of education to expand opportunity, strengthen communities and help shape a better future.
As America marks its 250th anniversary, Lincoln University reflects on its role in a larger national story, one in which education has helped expand opportunity, strengthen communities and prepare new generations to contribute to the nation's future.
This Independence Day, we honor the visionaries who shaped our nation, the soldier-scholars who founded Lincoln University and the students who will help lead America's and Lincoln's next chapter.
We also extend our gratitude to the Lincoln University family - students, alumni, faculty, staff, supporters and friends - whose belief in our mission continues to strengthen this institution. Because of your commitment, Lincoln University's legacy of freedom, education and opportunity continues to move forward.
Together, we celebrate 250 years of America and 160 years of Lincoln University, and we look forward to the future we will build together.
