KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Bronson Healthcare partnered with Intuitive Surgical today to bring a unique opportunity for local students and community partners, as well as doctors, hospital staff and board members, to learn about the advanced robotic technology that is making new strides in the early detection and treatment of lung cancer.
The interactive Thoracic Oncology Mobile Experience (TOME) Truck, an 18-wheel, 80,000-pound roving laboratory that enables Intuitive to bring their advanced robotic systems and instruments to hospitals across the country, traveled to Kalamazoo today for a special, one-day event. Attendees were invited to experience firsthand the capabilities of the Ion and da Vinci robotic surgical systems and learn how this new technology could lead to improved patient outcomes.
Bronson Healthcare was the first in southwest Michigan to introduce Ion robotic-assisted lung biopsy, a minimally invasive procedure that helps physicians reach lung nodules through a patient's natural airways. This is giving patients and referring providers local access to advanced technology designed to support earlier, more precise diagnosis.
"Since introducing this technology in April, we have already seen its impact for patients," said Zachary Bauer, DO, fellowship-trained pulmonologist in Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine at Bronson Methodist Hospital. "About 60 percent of the patients diagnosed through this program have been positive for lung cancer. This technology is helping us find cancer earlier, when patients can begin treatment sooner and have more options for care."
During the procedure, Bronson pulmonary specialists use the Ion system to guide a thin, flexible catheter through the airways to reach small or hard-to-find areas of the lungs. Tissue samples are collected and sent to a lab for testing. Finding answers earlier can help patients and care teams move more quickly toward the right treatment plan when additional care is needed.
