Fire Rebuild Progress Continues with New Milestones

Since May, an additional 10 homes have received Planning approval and six more homes have been issued Rebuild Permits, allowing construction to move forward. Every permit issued represents another family that is coming closer to getting back in their homes.

The City also reached significant rebuilding milestone on Carbon Beach, where the first beachfront home affected by the Palisades Fire is nearing completion of the framing stage. This represents an a particularly important step forward in the community's recovery and demonstrates the continued progress being made by homeowners, design professionals, contractors, and City staff, due to the many unique challenges that beachfront rebuilds face.

To further support rebuilding efforts, Community Development Director Yolanda Bundy is now stationed at the Rebuild Center daily. She will continue to work directly with homeowners, design professionals, and staff to identify and resolve issues in real time, helping remove obstacles and accelerate the path to Building Permit issuance.

In addition to processing applications, staff is actively evaluating the rebuild process to identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary steps, improve coordination among reviewing departments, and streamline communications with applicants. Current efforts include developing a single point of communication for review comments and corrections, creating clearer process roadmaps for homeowners before they begin the permitting process, upgrades to the Development Portal, enhances transparency with submittal and fee requirements, and implementing other workflow improvements designed to make rebuilding more predictable and efficient.

Several of these improvements will be implemented immediately or within the next month as the City continues its commitment to making the rebuilding process more efficient and user-friendly for homeowners and building professionals.
