EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - A 39-year-old man was found guilty today of murdering his girlfriend, U.S. Army reservist Anna Laura Costa Porsberg at a hotel in El Segundo four years ago. Her body was never found.
"For over three years, Anna's family and friends have waited for justice. Today the jury has spoken, returned its guilty verdict for first-degree murder against this sociopath and justice has arrived," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. "So-called 'no body' cases are some of the most difficult to prove because they rely so heavily on circumstantial evidence. I want to thank Deputy District Attorney Hilary Williams of the Major Crimes Division and the investigators in this case who methodically laid out the case piece-by-piece for the jury, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the pursuit of justice for Anna."
A jury deliberated for less than 2 ½ hours before finding Luis Antonio Gomes Akay (dob 7/14/86) guilty of one count of first-degree murder. He faces 25 years to life in state prison. Sentencing is scheduled for April 27 in Department 80 of the Airport Courthouse.
On Christmas Eve 2022, Gomes Akay and Porsberg, 22, traveled from New Jersey to Los Angeles and checked into a hotel in El Segundo. The couple visited numerous sites around the Los Angeles area over the next several days.
After going to a bowling alley on Dec. 27, 2022, the couple had an argument before returning to their hotel. Porsberg was not seen or heard from again. Two days later, Gomes Akay was seen dragging a large suitcase that appeared to be overfilled from the hotel.
Cell phone and GPS evidence showed that Gomes Akay then drove to the Angeles National Forest where he remained for about an hour. The defendant went back to the hotel and initially reported Porsberg missing.
Evidence presented at trial showed the defendant was controlling, jealous and possessive. Several prosecution witnesses flew from Brazil to testify that one of the defendant's previous girlfriends, 24-year-old Ana Claudia Dos Santos, had gone missing in Brazil after breaking up with Gomes Akay. Her body also has never been found.
Two of Gomes Akay's friends testified that the defendant often liked to say, "no body, no crime."
Case SA107706 was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Hilary Williams of the Major Crimes Division and was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau and the El Segundo Police Department.
