Traffic change coming to US Highway 24, Peterson Road intersection on Monday

The slip exit lane from eastbound U.S. Highway 24 to southbound Peterson Road will permanently close on Monday, January 5 as part of the ongoing safety improvement project in the area.

Drivers will need to use the signalized intersection to make a southbound turn during construction.

Beginning in January, crews plan to begin installing water line casings in the southwest area of the construction corridor near the electric substation. Crews continue installing storm drains at the north end of Peterson Road and Highway 24. This may cause some traffic delays in the southbound lanes. Watch for signs in the area for updates.

Colorado Springs Utilities is working on Peterson Road, south of Highway 24. They are installing electrical lines and fiber optic cables and expect this work to continue through mid-January. Temporary traffic signals continue operating at the north and south intersections of Peterson Road. This accommodates upcoming construction traffic. Watch for local signage to stay updated on construction and traffic changes.

The project reconstructs the Highway 24 and Peterson Road Interchange to provide a safer, more secure, and efficient transition to the Peterson Space Force Base North Gate. The project supports base access control in day-to-day and emergency operations and accounts for increasing traffic capacity on adjacent roadways associated with planned growth in the Pikes Peak region. The project considers complete transportation options within the adjacent corridors, including bus and bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and trails.
