EPA Begins Soil Cleanup at East Troy Contaminated Aquifer Superfund Site in Ohio

CHICAGO (February 3, 2026) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began a soil cleanup at the East Troy Contaminated Aquifer Superfund site in Troy, Ohio. The cleanup will address one of two areas EPA identified as the source of volatile organic compound contamination at the site. Work is expected to be complete by summer.

The project focuses on an area in the northwest corner of the former Hobart Cabinet property. Work is scheduled to take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some work may take place on Saturdays depending on weather conditions. Residents can expect increased truck traffic in the area during working hours.

Crews will excavate contaminated soil and transport it for proper disposal. Excavated areas will be backfilled with clean soil and disturbed areas restored. During these activities, EPA will suppress dust to ensure particulate contaminants do not migrate from the site. Before trucks leave the site, crews will clean and cover their loads with tarps to prevent tracking contaminants offsite.

The site encompasses a 20-square block area located along the western bank of the Great Miami River. Numerous businesses and industries operated in the area during the 20th century, several of which have been identified as potential sources of trichloroethene and tetrachloroethylene contamination at the site.
