Larson Statement on Fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

East Hartford, CT - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after federal immigration agents killed a Minneapolis resident.

"ICE agents continue to act with impunity, refusing to exercise any restraint - leaving a trail of death and violence in their path. It needs to end now," said Larson. "It is beyond horrifying to watch a second resident shot and killed by agents in Minneapolis. Local law enforcement must be allowed to fully investigate this shooting - with full cooperation from federal officials. We cannot allow these authoritarian abuses of power to go on for one minute longer in the United States of America - whether it is families being separated by armed, masked agents here in Connecticut, or residents being killed in Minneapolis. Accountability starts at the top - with Donald Trump and Kristi Noem. That is why I have called for Secretary Noem's impeachment and will continue to oppose funding for the Department of Homeland Security until this lawlessness ends, and ICE is reined in. The time for change is now, before more families have to suffer at the hands of this out-of-control secret police force."

Earlier this month, after an ICE agent executed Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, Larson and Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02) filed articles of impeachment against U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. This week, he voted againsta Department of Homeland Security funding bill that provides new funding for ICE but does not include reforms to hold the agency accountable for their abuses of power.

Larson has also vowed to introduce legislationto stop ICE from operating in communities without notifying state and local law enforcement, and is a cosponsor of the No Secret Police Actto require ICE agents to identify themselves, the Protecting Sensitive Locations Actto bar ICE raids in schools, hospitals, courthouses, places of worship, and social service agencies, and the DHS Use of Force Oversight Actto require agents to only use the force needed to carry out arrests.
