KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Mayor Quinton Lucas joined national leaders at the inaugural Meridian Sports Diplomacy Forum in Washington, D.C., discussing how cities leverage major sporting events to drive economic growth, build international partnerships, and strengthen community engagement ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on a panel alongside Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Dilpreet Sidhu, Mayor Lucas emphasized Kansas City's strategic approach to hosting World Cup matches and the transformative potential of global sporting events for mid-sized American cities.
"Cities are how people interact with our country," said Mayor Lucas. "We get the chance to sell and share our joy, our collaboration, our diversity - fundamentally, the best of all of us."
Mayor Lucas outlined Kansas City's decades-long investment in infrastructure and hospitality capacity that positioned the city to successfully bid for World Cup matches. He credited extensive collaboration between the business community, civic leaders, and cultural organizations, pointing to hometown companies like Hallmark and H&R Block that have decades of experience promoting Kansas City globally.
When asked what he hopes people feel about Kansas City during the World Cup, Mayor Lucas responded with one word: "Next. I want them to plan for what's next for our community."
The Meridian Sports Diplomacy Forum convened industry leaders, investors, policymakers, and cultural influencers to explore how sports can serve as a catalyst for economic development and global engagement.
