This statement expresses the willingness of both parties to continue strengthening technical cooperation, the exchange of good practices and the development of institutional capacities in migration management and border control.
The Minister of the Interior, John Reimberg and the Ambassador of the European Union in Ecuador, Jekaterina Doródnova, signed a Declaration of Intent on migration management and border control. The firm was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, as an honorary witness and the Head of Cooperation Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean of the European Commission, Olivier Luyckx who made an official visit to Ecuador.
This statement expresses the willingness of both parties to continue strengthening technical cooperation, the exchange of good practices and the development of institutional capacities in migration management and border control.
This cooperation will be developed within the framework of the initiatives promoted by EUROFRONT, a programme financed by the European Union and managed by FIAP and IILA through various cooperation mechanisms and tools.
The Ministry and the European Union may develop joint actions, in areas such as network cooperation and technological development, specialized training, strengthening of migration control systems and the exchange of information within the framework of international cooperation, among others.
During the event, Interior Minister John Reimberg said:
"Borders are spaces where risks, opportunities and shared responsibilities converge. In the face of mixed migration flows, illicit trafficking networks and their link to transnational organized crime, international cooperation is no longer an option but an urgent necessity. With the signing of this Declaration of Intent we send a clear message: we believe in co-responsibility and joint action to move towards a region that is safer and better prepared to face the challenges of the present and the future.
For her part, the Ambassador of the European Union in Ecuador, Jekaterina Doródnova, stressed that
"Ecuador is a key partner for the European Union because we work together under the framework of shared responsibility. Transnational organized crime affects our countries, our ports and our societies. Therefore, strengthening and strengthening this cooperation is not only a political priority: it is a necessary response to threats that, like criminal groups, also act together and cross borders."
The EUROFRONT Programme may provide specialized technical assistance and institutional support in order to strengthen national mechanisms for migration analysis and intelligence, including support for inter-institutional working groups aimed at risk analysis and the generation of evidence-based responses.
