Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

As an institution with a rich history of serving Hispanic and Latino students, UIW takes immense pride in its annual celebration of Hispanic heritage and achievements. This celebration is an opportunity to embrace the vibrant tapestry of Hispanic and Latino cultures on our campus. We invite you to explore, learn and be inspired by the achievements, traditions and voices that shape our world.

On Wednesday September 16, the UIW ATLAS Program hosted the ¡Independencia! y Mercado event on the Broadway campus to celebrate Latin American independence, culture and the diversity of the international student body. The UIW community enjoyed authentic Latin American products, foods and drinks, as well as local San Antonio vendors. Live performances by the UIW Folklórico Dance Troupe, St. Anthony Mariachi Band and Panama Lo Nuestro entertained the crowd.

Some vendors were UIW students, such as Jacob Saldaña, who is studying Engineering Management and works in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. He was selling his mother's artwork in between his classes. His mother, Miosotis Saldaña, is a Panamanian artist. Saldaña shared, "Her artwork is her passion and I wanted to share it with the community."

Martha Barron, owner of Chiquitas y Picositas Boutique had a variety of accessories consisting of earrings, headbands and purses that came from Oaxaca, Mexico. "This is my fifth year in business and my second year as a vendor here at UIW. I enjoy it and will be back for the next event at the end of the month." stated Barron.
