SCHEV approves new graduate certificate in Substance Abuse and Addictions Counseling

Education for Virginia (SCHEV) for a new graduate certificate in Substance Abuse and Addictions Counseling. This new program will provide knowledge and skills in the prevention, treatment and recovery of substance use disorders by exploring societal dimensions of substance abuse and addiction in the United States.

This program will give aspiring counselors an understanding of the neurobiological and pharmacological foundations of substance abuse and addictive behaviors, preparing them to work with individuals, families and communities impacted by substance misuse. Graduates will be able to apply counseling interventions in the treatment of substance abuse disorders.

"We are thrilled to receive SCHEV approval in support of the graduate certificate in Substance Use and Addictions Counseling, an initiative that reflects our commitment to addressing one of the most pressing behavioral health needs in our region," said Bethany Lanier, associate professor and chair of the Department of Counselor Education. "The launch of this certificate is more than the addition of a new certificate - it is an investment in hope."

The new certificate program supports Radford University's initiative to become a premier destination for health education and talent in Southwest Virginia, diversifying the educational portfolio for practitioners of different professions. Students will learn approaches to assessment, treatment planning, relapse prevention and recovery support, with particular attention to the needs of rural and underserved populations.

"By preparing counselors to respond to substance use and addiction through evidence-based practice with expertise, compassion and cultural responsiveness, we are creating opportunities for healthier individuals, stronger families and more resilient rural communities," Lanier said.
